Wednesday 24, January, 2007
+ First of all, sorry for doing such a lousy job with these pages. As you
may have guessed I've been working. A lot.
+ The Klinik album is out and was album of the week on Radio Dei 1/2007.
+ A new Deep Insight-single; "One Minute Too Late" is out.
+ I'm just about finished with the Collarbone album.
It was mixed by Jens Bogren (Fascinationstreet)and
mastered by Ue Nastasi (Sterling, NY). It's going to be a really
cool album, you'll see.
+ Now I'm working on a album for Habakuk. Tomorrow I'll be done tracking
and on monday I'll start mixing. Then it's off to Turku (again) to record some
drums for the Stanley album.
+ I bought myself a Rosetta 800. I had to. I tracked the Collarbone sessions
with an Apogee AD16X and I wouldn't go back.
+ Late 2006 I also did an EP for Molly Grows Up, a single for Stanley,
some 5-6 songs for an album with Clark Kent. Among other things.
Wednesday 20, September, 2006
+ The new Deep Insight album is finished after
over a year of hard work. It's out on HMC in October.
+ The Klinik recordings are almost finished and I believe
it's going to be a really groundbreaking album.
+ Yesterday I did a short demo session with The LeoBarby.
Apparently they are one step closer to getting a record deal and
all I can do is to hope they won't ditch me for some hotshot
producer if they get signed.
+ Tomorrow I'll be heading to turku to record some
songs with Clark Kent.
+ I bought myself Autotune and Drumagog because what
great tools they both are.
I did a single with the band Habakuk for Aika Oy and I'll be
mixing that one in a couple of weeks
Saturday 22, July, 2006
+ I did some mixing this week. Finished the Fogpilot
songs and you may want to check out the song "Don't stop",
I think it turned out really well.
+ I also did a short demo session with Kimmo Ollikainen´s
latest, Hencca & Big Bandwith some acoustic gtrs, udu and djembe.
+ I'll be mixing for the next two weeks or so and I'm really
liking the gear at the studio for now. Sure I could use a
quad comp, some more Lexicons, a 1176, a Distressor and
so on, but I seem to have all the tools I need
to get stuff done.
And mixing can be really fun when you´re not stuck in
problem-solving-mode all the time. I'm thinking about
doing a short rundown on the gear on this site.
Just a little something about the machines and
what I use them for.
Tuesday 27, June, 2006
+ The studio site is finally up and running.
+ I just completed a nice (but very hot) vocal overdub
session at Victory with Nerveseed. I'm also
doing some crazy stuff with Deep Insight at the moment.
Don't worry, I'll keep you informed.
+ I'll finally get to do the Clark Kent debut album!!!
We'll start recording in august or september
but there is no release date set.
These guys just keep on writing strong, catchy
rock tunes not unlike FooFighters, Weezer
and Bad Religion. If you know me, you also know those
bands have a special place in my heart.
And now, so does Clark Kent.
Monday 5, June, 2006
+ Minor updates on the webpage. Just be patient;
there's a v3.1 on the way.
+ I did two short sessions with Jamrod and Bad Media.
Here's what I used for the BM drumkit:
Kick in - MD421
Kick out - Audio Technica 4033
Sn top - sm57
sn bottom - MD441
Toms - MD421
Hat - NT5
Ride - 4033
Overheads - sm81
Room - C414 (omni, on the floor)
I've started to use a Ddrum trigger on the snare
most of the time. But I use it, not as a trigger,
but as another mic to give the drum some more crack.
That way I don't have to boost the high-mids as much
(which, as you know, usually results in a really nasty
sounding hihat)
But then again, there's always Soundreplacer...
+ I'll be mixing some songs for Llamainc. in July.
Wednesday 24, May, 2006
+ Tomorrow I'll pick up my new preamp. Here's a picture
for you to drool over. I aso bought myself one of those
RNLA:s from FMRAudio. It'll arrive just in time for the
Bad Media mix session.
+ I got my hands on the new Employee of the month
album today. As I've said before; these guys are tight.
Just check out the album.
+ Speaking of tight, tomorrow I'll head down to Hellsinki
to discuss the production of an album with the band Kolt.
Check out the bands´website for updates on that one.
+ I've added links to the client list. I'll also have a
guestbook set up soon.
+ As some of you know, I've been putting together a studio
with another longtime producer/engineer. I'm hoping to
be able do a great deal of my mixing and overdubs there
when it's finished. Which will be in a month or so.
Me and Roy of Instantmedia have been working
on a website for the studio and I promise to
notify you first when it's up and running.
Monday 8, May, 2006
+ Tomorrow I'll mix the second song for the Leobarby single
+ I'll be doing a short overdub/mix session with the band
Jamrod later this month.
Tuesday 25, April, 2006
+ Here`s the first review of the new Satura Lanx album.
+ I will produce and engineer the new Collarbone
album later this year for Spinefarm records.
+ Listen to the new Molly Grows Up song at their website.
+ I recorded some groovy 70's drum-loop-tracks for
AGR last monday. I also started preproduction
with Fogpilot and Badmedia last week.
And did a quick demo with Mechanical Monsters.
Friday 14, April, 2006
+ The Callisto album will be out May 10.
on Fullsteam Records. You can read a press
release (in finnish) here
+ The new Satura Lanx album is out!. Now let's
just wait for some reviews.
+ Jaakko Viitalähde of Virtalähde Analog Audio
is building me a custom preamp with two channels of
Neve 1272 and two channels of SSL9000. In addition
to that I thought I´d get my converters up to par so I´m
getting a RME 8 channel AD/DA (the ADI-8ds).
Thursday 30, March, 2006
+ The new Molly song is mixed
and waiting to be mastered.
+ I'll be recording some songs with
the band Nerveseed this summer.
+ On Monday I'll start recording a couple
of songs with The Leobarby and after that
I will take a week or so off. I have pretty much
worked every single day since the beginning of June
last year and the way this summer/fall looks, I'd better
take some time off while it still is possible.
+ Oh, and check out Kolt live if you
have the chance. These guys are tight. They are
touring Finland with Deathbed right now.
More info/dates at: www.koltalert.com
Monday 21, March, 2006
+ Yet another pleasant weekend with the guys in Molly
Grows Up is over. We tracked one song and I'd like to
get the mix done by the end of this week.
+ I bought myself a MD421 used. I'd like to have some
441's as well but they seem to be all too expensive right now.
Thursday 9, March, 2006
+ Two more reviews:
here (Molly Grows Up)
and here (Staley)
+ Some smaller sessions coming up with Fogpilot,
Molly
Grows Up, The Leobarby and Bad Media
Monday 6, March, 2006
+ Some more reviews:
Here, (Molly Grows Up)
here (Molly Grows Up)
and here (Stanley)
+ What am I doing right now? Well yesterday I recorded
some vocals and today I'll continue editing/mixing
some songs for a local project CD with various artists.
I'll probably also have to listen to some demos and
do some backup stuff. The usual. On friday me,
my wife and my two kids will head down to Turku
where I'm recording one song with the band Collarbone.
Tuesday 28, February, 2006
+ The new Deep Insight album got mastered today.
I didn't attend the mastering session but I know
Jens made sure the master is really hot and sexy.
Oh, and it's a really good album too!
+ Andrew Schneider turned out to be a awesome mixer!
And a great guy too. The Callisto mixes sound like
a million $ and I believe the album will be out in
a month or so.
+ I'll be doing an album with the Turku-based drunks,
Stanley later this year. You can read
another review of their single here
+ I bought some cheap PZM mics. Everyones got to have a couple of those, right?
+ A times I worry about my client list not getting any longer
even though I'm buried in work most of the time.
Guess what? A lot of the bands I work with
come back, many times, and I'm starting to realize
that's a very good thing. Besides; if I wanted
an endless client list, I would run a demo-studio.
Friday 3, February, 2006
+ The band Molly Grows Up was voted
demoband of the week on X-ryhmä today with
their song "Victors Stand"
+ You can read a review of the Stanley single here
+ I will head to Chartmakers (www.chartmakers.fi)
in the end of feb to master the Satura Lanx album with
Svante Forsbäck. It'll be out on Brown Records
(www.brownrecs.com) in late march.
+ I'll be doing some demos with the band Collarbone for
Spinefarm Records to hopefully secure my position in a
bigger production later this year.
+ The Deep Insight album is starting to take shape.
Expect to see a rockier side of the band on this album.
There is going to be some of that whiny emo-stuff on
the album as well, don't worry. We've been tracking mostly
drums and bass for the last 10 days and now I'm back in
Finland for a few days.
Friday 30, December, 2005
+ As the the end of the year 2005 is at hand, I'd like
to thank all bands, record companies, studio owners
and other people I've had the privilege to work with
during this past year.
Citing the folks at www.prosoundweb.com: Let's continue
to make records better, not just louder and cheaper.
So, Happy New Year everyone!
+ IMPORTANT!!! Whiptail Lizard/Tero Vienonen
no longer handles my booking. The contact/booking
section will be updated asap.
+ I never had the time to post any pictures of the
Callisto sessions. Sorry. There are, however, a few
at their website if you're interested. You're probably not.
Sunday 18, December, 2005
+ Download the new Satura Lanx video,
"Basking In The Shadows" at their website
(www.saturalanx.com).
I believe the guys
are finally getting the record released.
+ The recording of the new Callisto album is almost done.
I'm happy to tell you that Andrew Schneider (Cave In,
Keelhaul) will be mixing the album at his studio in New York
in February. How's that for a Christmas present!
Tuesday 6, December, 2005
+ The Callisto recording sessions kicked
off today. After 3 months of intensive pre-production,
I feel really confident in what we have so far. As I've
said before, with good songwriting and careful planning,
you just can't go wrong. We'll be tracking
drums/gtrs/bass/vox until Xmas and doing keyboards and
additional overdubs in early January.
I'll try to post some session photos as we go along. Mostly
boring tech stuff. Mics, pres, guitar cab setups and so on.
+ Deep Insight will enter the studio in February. We'll
once again head to Jens' milloin dollar room (Fascination
Street) in Örebro/Sweden and what a session it will be. As
I've said before, with a bassplayer that keeps drawing
carrots and cusswords on his naked body with a sharpie pen,
you just can't go wrong.
We've already started pre-production, done some demos
and picked out some songs for the record and I believe we
have a real winner this time. Or should I say once again.
+ I bought myself a brand new Mac Mini. And traded my
001 for a 002. It's in my mobile rig for overdubs and
editing. Other stuff I carry around usually includes
a DBX 386 pre/AD, my mics, a custom tele,
a glockenspiel and other assorted percussion.
+ The Stanley (www.stanleyband.tk) songs
are up on their website. Have a listen.
+ Just mixed 2 songs for Molly Grows Up. What can I say,
I really like the Avalon comp/eq on my master buss.
+ I'm negotiating for the production of at least 3 albums
for spring/summer next year. I can't really drop any names
at this time but I will keep you informed.
Monday 14, November, 2005
+ Just finished a short recording session with the
Turku-based band Molly Grows Up(www.molly.tk).
It's a little Helmet, Nirvana and Failure mixed with mellow vocals and a lot of effected guitars which makes
for a sort of 90's indierock vibe.
Heres what I used for drums/gtrs/bass:
Kick in: Shure sm91
Kick out: Neumann M147
Snare: sm57
Sn bottom: Beyer M201
hihat: Neumann KM148
Room: DPA 4041 (on the floor)
Oh: Shure sm81
Tom 1: Sennheiser E609
Tom 2: Electrovoice RE20
Rhythm gtrs: Oktava ML52 ribbon
Bass: Sansamp
The songs will be mixed in a couple of weeks and probably
then posted on their website.
+ I'll be busy recording the new Callisto album at Studio57
in December. The tracking will hopefully be done by the
end of January and the record should be out before summer. Stay tuned for updates and check out
their website at www.callistochaos.com
Tuesday 1, November, 2005
+ You can read a review of the Flyme promo here
Thursday 27, October, 2005
+ The Flyme promo was voted demo of the week
on X-ryhmä today.
+ Download the new Valium77 songs at
www.valium77.com
+ Listen to the song "Glory Murder" at
www.saturalanx.com
Monday 24, October, 2005
+ www.jonasolsson.net (v3.0) is now up and running.
I'll try to keep things updated but if it looks slow
sometimes, that only means I'm busy recording or mixing
or forcing someone to have glockenspiel on their songs.
Tuesday 27, September, 2005
+ I started recording a single with the band
Stanley(www.stanleyband.tk). It will be the
first release on the indie label Mastermind recordings.
We'll be recording this week and mixing next week.
+ I bought myself a Yamaha SPX-90. It has a really
nice pitchshifter.
Some of the verbs are pretty useful too.
Sunday 12, September, 2005
+ I just finished mixing the new Satura Lanx
album. We did the mix at Studio Watercastle
in Jyväskylä and it sounds really good.
The band will be posting audio samples on their
web-site in the near future. Meanwhile, they are
still shopping for a deal.
Monday 22, August, 2005
+ I started production with the band Silverfuse
today.
We're doing a sort of single with two
b-sides. The single, "Smalltown Shelley" is one
of the best songs I've heard this year.
+ A rough production schedule for the new
Deep Insight album has been confirmed.
We'll head to the studio in February 2006 with
Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia).
+ The song "Hurricane Season" by
Deep Insight has been no. 1 on the Finnish
single-chart a couple of weeks now.
Sunday 31, July, 2005
+ It's now official. I will be producing the next
Callisto
album scheduled to be recorded
in December.
The studio and engineer/mixer
for the album are yet to be confirmed.
+ I will start recording the Satura Lanx
record next week.
+ This week I'll be mixing songs for
Bad Media (www.Badmediaband.com)
and Flyme.
Wednesday 20, July, 2005
+ Just finished off the recording sessions with
Bad Media today. We ended up doing 3 songs
for an upcoming promotional-release.
+ Saturday, June 4, 2005
I started pre-production with the band
Bad Media today.
Monday, May 30, 2005
+ I've been mixing an album for the popband
Minea the last three days. The music is a
mixture of U2 and massive 80's rock.
Most of the songs have over 70 tracks; lots of
backing vocals, tons of guitars, synths and
cheesy loops but mixing it has been a real
eye-opener for me. They are still shopping
for a record-deal.
Tuesday, May 10, 2005
+ I got a finished copy of the new Stanley single
that I worked on earlier this year. The guys
will be sending the CD all over so stay tuned
for some reviews.
Friday, May 6, 2005
+ I spent two days last week co-mixing 5 songs
for the upcoming Vaarna EP. It will be released
June 10 by Andur Industrial. The rest of the
week I mainly did vocal overdubs for a
yet to be named acoustic-loop-pop project
with Juha Kananen of Habakuk
and Marko Loukamaa.
Tuesday, May 3, 2005
+ It looks like I'll be busy working on
Satura Lanx's debut album this fall.
The release was planned with Kireru Records
and possibly Combat Rock Industry but as for
now, there is nothing confirmed.
It will however be one hell of a record.
Friday, May 2, 2005
+ I saw Employee Of The Month live today.
I strongly recommend you to check them out
if you have the chance.
These guys are tight.
They'll be working on their first album the next
two months at Noisecamp and at their
rehearsal studio.
Friday, April 22, 2005
+ I will begin editing&mixing a tune for the band
Chill today.
They will be filming a music video
for the song called "While" this summer with
director Timo Lepistö.
Thursday, April 28, 2005
+ I will get together with Juha Kyyrö of
Fullsteam Records next week and discuss the
production schedules for the next (second)
Callisto album.
Stay tuned, some really
interesting news coming up.
Tuesday, April 12, 2005
+ Just finished a three day session with a
rock/metal band from Turku.
Working with
Arttu Sarvanne at
Studio Watercastle
was definitely a learning experience.
What an engineer!
Thursday, April 07, 2005
+ I bought a used Dbx 117 stereo compressor.
Great for clicky kickdrums and bass.
I first heard these in action at Soundlab Studios.
Mieszko
had two 118's that he used on drums, mainly kick.
Sunday, April 03, 2005
+ I layed down some drum tracks for the band
Aeroflop this weekend. Aretwo of
SELA will be
producing the album which is scheduled to be
released later this year.
Thursday, March 03, 2005
+ Check out the new Jimmy Eat World album,
"Futures".
I don't know about their
older stuff but this one definitely rocks.
